Abstract
1,020,606. Travelling wave tubes; electrode materials. C.S.F. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FILS . Aug. 4, 1964 [Aug. 6, 1963], No. 31170/64. Heading H1D. A crossed field travelling wave tube has a delay line 3 secured to an insulating base 2 and a metallic sole electrode 4 (not shown) facing the delay line, wherein the surface of the sole electrode facing the delay line is coated with a refractory layer 5 (not shown) having low electrical conductivity at least on its surface. The refractory layer may be composed of a metal-ceramic mixture, e.g. a substance of the " cermet " type or a layer of refractory insulating material covered with a superficial layer of slightly conducting material such as a colloidal suspension of graphite in water. Alternatively, the insulating layer may be porous e.g. of alumina, which is then impregnated with colloidal graphite highly diluted in water or heated under pressure in an oven in a methane atmosphere, the carbon derived from the decomposition of the methane penetrating the pores. An aluminium layer may also cover the sole electrode of e.g. copper, which may be formed into a micro-porous alumina layer 1 micron thick by anodic oxidation.
