Abstract
808,292. Discharge tubes. CORNING GLASS WORKS. April 6, 1956 [April 11, 1955], No. 10603/56. Class 39(1). An electronic device comprises a stack of plates of electrical insulating material, one end plate of the stack having on its inner surface a cathode comprising a coating of electron emissive material, the oppositely disposed end plate supporting an anode facing a circular passage through a spacer plate of the stack, the passage being also faced by the cathode, both the cathode and the anode having a lead extending outside the stack. The anode may occupy a pocket in the plate 16, Fig. 1, and its lead 17 passes through this plate, the cathode plate 11 being separated from the anode plate 16 by the spacer plate 14 having an aperture 15 for the passage of electrons. Alternatively or additionally the anode may be formed by a conductive fluorescent coating 32, Fig. 3, on the inner surface of the anode plate 36. A grid plate may be provided comprising an apertured plate 38 with a strip 20 of conductive material by means of which control potentials may be applied. The tube shown in Fig. 4 has a cathode 411, grids 414, 48 spacer plate 41 and anode plate 46, a plurality of electron paths being established through aligned apertures in these plates, the apertures in the two grids being controlled in horizontal rows 416 in the one case and vertical rows 410 in the other so that any single one or more of the possible paths may be activated. A common anode coating 42 is shown but each path may be provided with an individual anode. The cathode coating may be rendered emissive by direct or infra red heating or photoelectrically.
