Abstract

1,201,860. Tunnel-effect devices. MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO. Ltd. 24 Dec., 1968 [28 Dec., 1967 (8), No. 61288/68. Heading H1K. [Also in Division H4] A printing device (see Division H4) comprises a dielectric substrate 11, Fig. 3, a thin aluminium film 12, a thin insulating layer 13 e.g. of aluminium oxide, and an array of thin gold films 14. A voltage applied between metal films 12 and 14 yields a very intense electric field across thin film 13 which pulls electrons from film 12 by the tunnel effect, these electrons being emitted through layer 13 and thin films 14. A control electrode 17, interposed between insulators 16 and 16<SP>1</SP> is disposed in front of tunnel cathode 15 (11, 12, 13 and 14), and an image signal voltage is applied thereto in synchronism with scanning of the tunnel cathodes so that an electron image is formed on recording paper 18.
