Abstract
1,032,768. Electron storage tubes. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 12, 1962 [Oct. 17, 1961], No. 37098/61. Heading H1D. A tunnel effect cathode for e.g. a barrier grid storage tube having a target arrangement similar to that of a " Radechon " (cf. R.C.A. Review, June, 1955, pp. 197 ... 215) comprises a matrix formed by an insulating support sheet 1 (e.g. of glass) carrying parallel conducting strips 2 (e.g. of aluminium evaporated on to the glass) and covered by insulating strips 3 (e.g. an anodized layer, or a semi-conductor material) about 70 A thick. A second set of conducting strips 4 are arranged at right angles to the first over the insulating strips 3. Pulsing of any two particular strips 4, 2 (about <SP>3</SP> volts) causes tunnel emission from a selected portion of the cathode. In operation, the cathode and target are immersed in a magnetic field (about 1 line/cm.<SP>2</SP>) perpendicular to the cathode and target. Modifccations.-(i) A reverse bias may be applied to all conductors 4, 2, other than the pair being pulsed to increase the ratio of emission at the selected area relative to others. (ii ) To reduce external connections, the cathode conductors may be divided into four sections connected together in parallel as shown in Fig. 3, so that when any pair of leads are pulsed four sections of the cathode will emit. Grid electrodes are included between the cathode and collector electrode, and may comprise two vertical and two horizontal strips, so that by applying a suitable bias, electron projection to the target is suppressed from all but one cathode section. (iii) The cathode might be used in a luminescent display tube in which the screen is scanned by cyclic switching of the cathode connections.
