Abstract

1,205,870. Cathode ray tubes. MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO. Ltd. 13 Dec., 1968 [18 Dec., 1967; 28 Dec., 1967(2)], No. 59376/68. Heading H1D. [Also in Division H4] A printing device comprises an ink vessel disposed in front of a cathode ray tube (see latter), the ink in the ink vessel being electrically charged by the electron beam of the tube, and a control electrode disposed outside the cathode ray tube which modulates the magnitude of the inks' charge according to an image information signal voltage applied thereto, the amount of ink deposited on a recording paper being dependent upon the potential or the control electrode which depends on the information signal. In Fig. 1 the cathode ray tube 1 has an electron-previous thin film 4 made of for example aluminium foil through which the scanning electron beam passes to charge the ink 6 in vessel 5. The resulting negative charge carried on the ink is modified by a signal voltage on a control electrode 8 interposed between insulating plates 7 and an amount of ink dependent on the signal voltage is attracted by a backing electrode 9 through a line of small holes in vessel 5 on to a recording paper 10. A secondary electron emissive material 15 such as gold may be applied to the thin film 4, the ink being charged by the secondary electrons emitted therefrom when the electron beam passes through the thin film 4 and hits material 15. In a second embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown) the cathode ray tube comprises an electrostatic printing cathode ray tube having an array of electrically conductive pins in its face plate. In a third embodiment, Fig. 4, the cathode ray tube has a fibre-optics face plate 34 and a light from luminescent layer 33 is transmitted therethrough on to a photo-conductive layer 36 whose resistivity decreases accordingly thereby producing an electric charge which is transferred to ink 37 by a signal voltage applied between layer 36 and an electrode 40 interposed between insulating plates 41, and an amount of ink dependent upon the signal voltage is attracted by the backing electrode 39 on to the paper 38.
