Abstract

887,517. Electron microscopes. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 25, 1958 [Nov. 27, 1957], No. 37012/57. Class 39(1) An intensifier plate comprises a thin, tightly stretched, electrically insulating plastic membrane 2 coated on one side with a film 1 of ' bombardment-induced-conductivity' material such as selenium. The film 1 is preferably, deposited on a metal layer 5 coated on the membrane 2; on the free face of the film 1 an anisotropically conducting layer 6 with high tranverse resistance is formed from gold smoke. The free face of the membrane is coated with a metal layer 4, on to which a high energy image beam is directed. The beam penetrates through the layers 4, 5 and membrane 2 into layer 1 thus increasing its conductivity. A low energy beam from electron gun 7 scans layer 6, and the layer 5 is held at the same potential as the gun to provide a datum to layer 1 at which the electron beam is repelled from the target. Between scans charge leaks away through the conductive parts of layer 1 and its replacement by the beam induces capacitatively a charge on layer 5; an amplified signal of which may be observed across load resistor 10 on cathode ray tube 16. Any charge collecting on layer 4 and membrane 2 is led away to earth. Electrostatic guard rings 13, 14 at +3 and +50 volts respectively may be provided to minimise the effects due to stray electrons. In a modification the plate 5 is kept at a high potential with respect to that of the gun cathode so that selenium layer will stabilise at the second secondary emission cross-over point. Specification 887,516 is referred to.
