Abstract

665,877. Cathode-ray tubes. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 13, 1949 [Feb. 3, 1948], No. 3072/48. Class 39 (i). The target electrode of a cathode-ray tube comprises a photo-conductive layer and a conductive signal plate and it is scanned by a lowvelocity beam so that the equlibrium potential of the scanned surface corresponds substantially to that of the cathode, the signal plate being maintained at a positive potential relative to said cathode. The target 2 is composed of a layer 3 of glass or mica on one side of which are two layers, one a semi-transparent signal plate 4 and the other a layer 5 of photo-conductive material, e.g. zinc selenide. The electron gun comprises a cathode 6, shield 7, an apertured anode 8 and a metallic wall coating 9. Near to the target is a decelerating electrode 10, the various electrodes being suitably connected to the potentiometer 11, 12. Scanning coils 13 and focusing coils 14 control the beam. The signal plate 4 is connected to an impedance 15 and is maintained a few volts positive with respect to the cathode. When light falls on the layer 5, the area becomes conductive and the potential of the surface of the layer 5 rises, the scanning-beam giving an appropriate signal. The apparatus is suitable for radar and television transmission. Specifications 463,297, 465,060 and 540,034 are referred to. The Provisional Specification states that the photoconductive layer may be replaced by a photovoltaic layer as in Specification 462,550.
