Abstract

473,554. Cathode-ray tubes. BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., and SZEGHO, C. April 14, 1936, No. 10756. [Class 39 (i)] A tube for producing a light spot varying in intensity according to the brightness of successive points of a picture to be transmitted and so for controlling a photo-electric cell to produce picture signals has a screen 3 on one side of which an electric charge image corresponding to the picture is produced and the' other side of which is coated with fluorescent material 4 and scanned by a cathode-ray from a gun 5. An electron image is projected on to the screen 3 from a photo-electric cathode 1 on which the picture is projected. Negative charges build up on the screen 3 corresponding to the picture brightness and variably repel the cathode-ray to vary the brightness of the spot on the material 4 struck by the ray. This spot is projected on to a photo-electric cell 7 which may be integral with the tube 2. The screen 3 may be a thin mica sheet, a metallic mosaic on an insulating base or a mosaic of insulated transverse conductors as described in Specification 461,312 with a continuous fluorescent layer on one side. To prevent light produced by the material 4 from affecting the cathode 1, the screen 3 is opaque, or the material of the cathode 1 is insensitive to the fluorescent light, or the tube 2 is bent through a right-angle between the cathode 1 and screen 3, the electron image being correspondingly deflected.
