Abstract

515,301. Cathode-ray tubes ; image dissectors ; electron multipliers. LUBSZYNSKI, H. G., and KLATZOW, L. March 29, 1938, No. 9557. [Class 39 (i)] A composite electron beam corresponding to an optical image is obtained by projecting the image on to a layer of a material the electrical properties of which vary with the illumination, such as photo-conductive or photo-voltaic materials, the layer being so thin that transverse conduction is negligible, and deriving the electron beam from the surface of this layer. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a mica support 2 carries a transparent metal layer 1 on the surface of which is formed a photo-conductive layer 3. On the surface of the layer 3 is a caesiated mosaic 4 of ordinary type. The mosaic 4 is illuminated and emission is checked by a grid electrode 5 about 3 volts negative to it. An image to be intensified is projected on to the layer 3 and disturbs the equilibrium, producing a composite beam by emission from the mosaic. This beam is accelerated by an electrode 6 and focussed by a coil 7 on to a fluorescent screen 8. A second photo conductive electrode and emission mosaic may be formed on the back of the screen 8 so as to produce a second electron stream corresponding to the. fluorescent image. The device may also be used as an image dissector, or the screen 8 may be a mosaic scanned by a cathode ray to produce image signals. The surface of the layer 3 opposite to that on which the image falls is rendered opaque by filling up the spaces between the particles of the mosaic with insulating material such as magnesium oxide, or the light illuminating the mosaic may be of such wave length as not to effect the conductivity of the layer 3. Alternatively the mosaic may be of thermionic instead of photo electric material, and be heated to 300‹-400‹C., or the mosaic may be dispensed with and the layer 3 flooded with an electron beam, the composite beam being produced by the secondary electrons. An arrangement using photo-voltaic instead of photo-conductive materials is also described. Specifications 462,550, 480,996 and 489,428 are referred to.
