Feb. 9, 1935, Nos. 1973/36 (divided out of 455,085) and 18784/35. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (iii)] The mosaic screen of a television transmitter comprises a transparent sheet 21 of material, such as mica, having high resistance in directions parallel to its surface and a transparent conducting layer 23 which forms the signal plate and is connected through an output impedance 16 to the electron gun 3 ... 6 for the cathoderay 17 scanning the mica surface. An optical system 15 projects an image through the screen on to a separate photo-electric cathode 20, means such as a coil 28 focusing electrons from the cathode 20 to form an electron image on the mica 21. A ring 29 on the second anode 6 of the electron gun collects secondary electrons from the screen 21. In a modification, the cathode 20 and coil 28 are omitted, the electron gun is normal to the screen and the side of the screen scanned by the cathode-ray has a mosaic of mutually insulated conductive elements coated with photo-electric material to which light penetrates through the mica 21 and layer 23. The layer 23 may be provided with a thickened border giving the picture a black edge and may have its conductivity improved by thickening it in narrow strips or in mesh pattern. Specifications 442,666, 445,485, and 455,085 are referred to. One of the Provisional Specifications describe also an arrangement included in Specification 455,085.
