Abstract

1439045 Metal-vapour lamps WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 10 Sept 1973 [22 Sept 1972] 42422/73 Heading H1D A frame 24 supporting a sodium containing ceramic arc tube 26 in an outer vitreous lamp envelope 14 is made of an electrically conducting non-photoelectron emissive material to prevent a negative charge accumulating on the outer surface of the wall 28 of the arc tube 26 and leading to dendritic cracking of the wall with resulting loss of sodium. The preferred material is stainless steel coated with chrome oxide. Alternative material are stainless steel, chrome iron, tantalum clad Ni and Fe, Ti, or any metal coated with Pt or Au. In addition, the side members of the frame 24 may-be surrounded by tubes 46, 48 of alumina or fused quartz for part of the whole of their lengths to prevent barium from gettens 38 depositing on the wire of the frame, and electron interceptors 50 may be located between the arc tube 26 and the frame 24 and connected so as to be always at the opposite potential to the frame. The arc tube 26 may contain an inert gas and mercury in addition to sodium and the lamp is completed by a metal base 12. (For Figure see next column.)
