Abstract

1,205,844. Metal-vapour lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 13 March, 1968 [17 March, 1967], No. 12280/68. Heading H1D. A vapour arc photochemically useful light source comprises a U.V. transmissive envelope 3 containing a quantity 19 of mercury and a halide of Bi other than the fluoride, and a starting gas, the quantity of mercury being sufficient to cause collision line-broadening of the Bi emission, but insufficient to cause depletion of Bi halide. The mercury is totally volatilized in operation and produces a vapour pressure of ¢ to 5 atmospheres. The partial pressure of Bi halide vapour is 10 to 200 tons at a minimum wall temperature of 250‹ to 450‹ C. The starting gas may be neon, argon or other inert gas at a pressure of 15 to 25 tons. The envelope 3 is supported by a wire frame in an outer envelope 1. Both envelopes may be of quartz or yttria.
