In a light source, the heat developed by an arc discharge between two electrodes in a metal vapour and/or a rare gas, is used to heat to incandescence, i.e. a temperature of above 1600‹C, the inner wall of a capillary tube, i.e a tube having a bore not greater than 0.5 mm, of silica or crystalline magnesia, which materials possess an absorption band in the ultra-violet region which moves towards and into the visible region at the high temperature required to produce incandescence. The capillary tube constitutes part of the sealed envelope containing the discharge and has enlarged ends in which the electrodes are located. The envelope may contain argon at a pressure of 20 mms of Hg. Specifications 476,774 and 522,106 are referred to.
