Abstract

854,388. Metal-vapour lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan. 6, 1959 [Jan. 6, 1958], No. 485/58. Class 39(1). In order to maintain a region of a discharge lamp sufficiently cool to allow mercury vapour to condense, the dimensions of the foot-tube 6 are varied until a temperature not exceeding 43‹C. at the end of foot-tube 6 is achieved when the ambient air temperature is 25‹C., and the lamp is working at its rated wattage of 80 or 125 watts. The diameter of foot-tube 6 which is flanged and sealed to the envelope part 1, must not be less than # of that of the larger tube section and may by 2/5 or 2/3 of that diameter, the foot-tube lengths varying in accordance with the length of the envelope and the foottube diameter. Shielding means may be used in the lamp to restrict heat transfer to the end of foot-tube such as a disc 11, or indentations in the lamp envelope. The lamp has a gas filling of argon and neon mixture, or neon alone at 2À9 mms. of Hg.
