Abstract
937,938. Metal vapour lamps. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 24, 1961 [March 7, 1960], No. 8006/60. Class 39 (1). A sodium vapour electric discharge lamp comprises an arc tube 8 of light permeable vitreous or ceramic material of high alumina content sealed at its ends by metallic or ceramic discs 9, 10 supporting electrodes 2, 3 having a coating of electron emissive material and being connected to leads 6, 7 which pass through the stem 5 of an outer heat insulating container 4. The arc traverses an atmosphere containing sodium at a partial pressure of between 5 and 500 mm. of mercury and a rare gas, e.g. neon, at a pressure sufficient to support an initial discharge between the electrodes, and the outer container 4 may be evacuated or formed as a double walled Dewar flask. A thermally insulating glass wall 12 and a thin reflective film of metal, e.g. gold, on the inside of container 4, may be provided to assist in maintaining the operating temperature within the range 500-800‹ C.
