Abstract
518,455. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. (Patent-Treuhand-Ges. fur Elecktrische Gluhlampen). Sept. 30, 1938, No. 28477. [Class 39 (i)] An H.P. M.V. lamp is designed to work on a flat or positive characteristic even when the power, W, dissipated is less than 200 watts and there is no forced cooling. In this lamp the distance L between the electrodes is such that W/L is greater than 200 watts/cm. and the interior surface S of the envelope is such that W/S is greater than 25 watts/sq. cm. The pressure of the metal vapour in full operation exceeds 30 atmospheres. A distance L less than 5 mm. is also claimed. In the example illustrated the power W is 80 watts. The internal diameter of the envelope 1 is 6.5 mm. so that S=1.3 sq. cm. and W/S=38 watts/sq. cm. The distance between the electrodes is 2 mm. so that W/L=250 watts/cm. The envelope 1 is filled with argon at 20 mm. (higher pressures up to 400 mm. may be preferable to secure a quick run-up) and contains a globule of mercury 11 exerting a pressure of 130 atm. when all evaporated in full operation. The electrodes are small perforated tungsten canisters filled with thoria and are cooled by touching the envelope. The envelope is supported within a sealed glass bulb 9 filled with gas, e.g. nitrogen at 300 mm. pressure.
