880,422. Discharge lamps. PATENTTREUHAND-GESELLSCHAFT FUR ELEKTRISCHE GLUHLAMPEN. Aug. 5, 1958 [Sept. 17, 1957], No. 25043/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 39 (1) In an electric rare gas discharge lamp for continuous operation in which the electrode distance amounts to at least double the inside diameter of the tube which may be of quartz for obtaining a wall-stabilised discharge the filling pressure of the gas reduced to a lamp without dead space lies between 5 and 350 mm. of mercury so that when the lamp is operated with artificial cooling at a low gradient of less than 30 volts per cm. and at a current density of less than 100 ampÞres/cm.<SP>2</SP> the imput concentration is between 5 and 200 watts/cm.<SP>3</SP> the ion temperature is equal to or only a little less than the electron temperature. When artificial cooling is employed the input concentration may be as high as 1000 watts/c.c. The gas filling may be of xenon, krypton, argon, helium or neon or mixtures thereof and additions of carbon dioxide, metal vapours, hydrogen, halogens, or nitrogen may be made so long as the number of rare gas molecules exceeds the number of molecules of the addition. The lamp is provided with quartz grids to prevent sputtering and the electrodes are made of a refractory oxide. The Specification contains a table of several preferred operating conditions of the lamp.
