Abstract
698,452. Discharge lamps. HANOVIA CHEMICAL & MANUFACTURING CO. Jan. 9, 1952 [Jan. 11, 1951], No. 731/51 Class 39(i) A compact-source lamp has a spherical envelope 1 having a pair of oppositely disposed side tubes 2, each containing an electrode 4 in the form of a tungsten rod having a length of at least three times the inside radius of the spherical envelope, and a major portion of each rod being encased in its respective side tube; each electrode 4 has mounted on it a first and second auxiliary electrode 7 and 9. The vacuum-tight seal is formed at 6. The discharge is initiated by the first auxiliary electrodes 7, which are small wire coils, possibly of tungsten but preferably molybdenum or tantalum. The second auxiliary electrodes 9, which are heavier tungsten coils than 7, take over and sustain the discharge until the relatively massive main electrodes 4 have heated up sufficiently. The whole starting procedure occurs in a fraction of a second. The main electrode spacing may be from a few mm. to about 2 cm., and dimensions of the main and auxiliary electrodes are given. The lamp has a rare gas filling, possibly with mercury vapour also, at a total pressure of at least one atmosphere.
