Abstract

Vacuum tubes; lowpressure metallic-vapour apparatus.-A gas-filled discharge tube adapted for the radiation of ultraviolet light has an incandescent oxide or oxidecontaining cathode 1, one or more solid anodes 2, 3, a gaseous filling comprising mercury vapour and a rare gas such as argon, and has at least a part of the wall of quartz or glass of extremely low coefficient of expansion. The lamp may operate with either an arc or a positive! column discharge, and starting may be assisted by an auxiliary anode 4. In the device shown, the cathode is formed by spiralling a tungsten wire on which a nickel wire coated with barium oxide has been wound. The anodes consist of carbon cylinders with bevelled ends. The envelope comprises an outer glass wall 6 and an inner chamber formed by a quartz wall 7 into which substances may be placed for treatment. The glass and quartz parts are connected together by a graded seal 10, comprising a number of rings of glass having graded coefficients of expansion.
