Abstract

Vacuum tubes; low-pressure metallic-vapour apparatus.-In an incandescent-cathode discharge tube with solid electrodes and adapted to emit positive column light, all the electrodes are led out at one end of the tube. The tube shown has two anodes 17 separated by a screen 20 at the end occupied by the stem 15, and a preferably oxide incandescent cathode 16 at the other end, the cathode-supporting conductors being embedded in insulating tubes 19. For irradiating substances the tube may contain mercury vapour and argon or other rare gas, and the part 12 of the tube that emits ultra-violet rays may be connected to a glass stem portion 14 by a graded seal 13. The part 14 is wider than the part 12 so that a shoulder is formed adapted to be seated on an annular support 24 in the vessel 21 through which the substance to be irradiated: flows. Fig. 1 (not shown) shows a lamp in which the tube is similarly supported in an aperture in the end of a trough-shaped reflector. Mercury vapour is stated to condense only in the wide' end of the tube, leaving the narrow part clear for emission of rays. Specification 313,727 is referred to.
