Abstract
230,497. Naamlooze Vennootschap Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken. March 10, 1924, [Convention date]. R÷ntgen-ray tubes. - An incandescent cathode is mounted in a metal vessel which is highly insulated from the anode and has a constricted portion with an opening close to the anode so that the electron stream is caused to strike a limited area of the anode. As shown, a straight tungsten filament 10 is mounted on quartz beads 14 in a vessel 9, having at one end an aperture 15 adjacent to the tungsten target 4 of a chrome-iron anode 3, and at the other end an aperture 16 or window of metal or gauze for the passage of R÷ntgen rays, which are projected axially of the tube and at right angles to the target. The vessel 9 may be of aluminium, but is preferably of molybdenum or chrome-iron, and is mounted by means of a clamp 7 on a glass envelope 1. The anode is mounted on a reentrant tube 2 and is provided with a tube 5 for the supply of cooling liquid. The vessel 9 may be maintained at a potential negative to that of the cathode, for instance by connecting a resistance between the vessel and the cathode. The tube may be highly exhausted or may contain a gas such as hydrogen or helium at a pressure of above 0.0006 mm. of mercury, for instance 0.01 mm. in the case of hydrogen.
