Abstract

701,050. X-ray tubes. EHRENBERG, W., and SPEAR, W. E. March 22, 1950, No. 7216/50. Class 39(1) A fine-focus X-ray tube has an electrostatic lens system providing an equipotential surface in the region of cathode potential, said surface surrounding the whole of the discharge path from cathode to anticathode, and increasing in diameter in this direction. The embodiment shown has a hairpin filament 5 carried by a mounting 6, and surrounded by a cylindrical electrode 7. The electrode 7 is extended as a cylindrical member 10, terminating in an anti-corona ring 11, and has an internal diaphragm 8 with a central aperture 9 substantially co-planar with the filament tip. The member 10 need not be integral with 7, and also the ring 11 may be mounted on a separate partition, Fig. 3 (not shown). In this case a small variable p.d. can be applied between the electrodes 7, 10 on the one hand, and the envelope 1 and the partition, for focus correction. The cathode structure is mounted on a bellows and screw arrangement to permit mechanical adjustment from outside the envelope. The anticathode 18 is hollow for water-cooling: The electrodes 7, 10 and metal envelope 1 are all' in the region of cathode potential, i.e., any difference therefrom is small in relation to the p.d. between cathode and anticathode. Thus an equipotential surface in the region of cathode potential surrounds the whole discharge path. This may increase gradually in diameter from cathode to anticathode, or as in the present example, in a single large step. Suitable dimensions are given as a guide to construction.
