Abstract

560,155. Discharge apparatus. MULLARD RADIO VALVE CO., Ltd., and STEPHEN, R. A. Aug. 19, 1942, No. 11688. [Class 39 (i)] One or more foils of zirconium tantalum, titanium, or other material which operates as a getter when heated, are arranged in.the discharge path between the cathode and anode of an electron discharge tube, the discharge passing through an aperture in each foil which is thereby heated. Preferably the aperture is formed by cathode bombardment of a continuous foil mounted in the path of the discharge during manufacture of the tube, the foil first being degassed by heating by bombardment during pumping and then perforated by increasing the bombardment to evaporate that portion of the foil in the direct line of the discharge. The foil getters may be utilized in conjunction with alkaline earth or other getters which require to be kept remote from the discharge space. Fig. 1 shows an X-ray tube 1 having a foil 9 disposed between the cathode 2 and anode 3, the foil being held between apertured spiders 7, 8 mounted in a hood 5 for the anode. The foil may be prefabricated with a central aperture, or the latter may be formed by bombardment in the tube. In a modified construction the central portion 11, Fig. 3, of the tube envelope is of metal and carries an internal ring 15 to which the foil is clamped.
