Abstract
830,319. Velocity-modulated tubes. SIEMENS & HALSKE A.G. April 11, 1958 [April 11, 1957], No. 11628/58. Class 39(1). In a velocity-modulated tube including an electron beam generating system and focusing means for concentrating the beam close to its axis, in which the preferred operating pressure of 10À8 mm. is not obtained, the gas residue is converted by the electron beam into ions which are concentrated by the focusing means to travel substantially concentrically with and in the immediate vicinity of the axis of the beam in a direction opposite thereto and a plate of getter substance, adapted to be heated, is arranged across the path of the ions. As shown in Fig. 1 the plate 3 of getter substance, which may be zirconium, tantalum, niobium or titanium, may be arranged at the centre of an annular electron-emissive coating 2 on the cathode 1. Alternatively a concave plate of getter substance may be arranged behind a central opening in the cathode. The getter substance may be heated by the cathodeheating means or separate heating means may be provided. In a further embodiment the getter substance 6 is coated on a re-entrant portion of the cathode 1 or this re-entrant portion may consist entirely of the getter substance. If titanium is used as the getter substance with a nickel cathode, a tantalum foil may be inserted between the titanium and the nickel of the cathode to prevent these substances from alloying.
