Abstract

833,065. Velocity-modulated tubes. SPERRY RAND CORPORATION. July 12, 1957 [Aug. 1, 1956], No. 22149/57. Class 39(1). An arrangement for coupling the resonator of a klystron to a waveguide comprises a coupling chamber 80 shaped like a coaxial transmission line, preferably less than a half wave-length at the operating frequency, which is coupled to the cavity resonator 61 by way of an aperture 78 in a flexible diaphragm 50. Coupling chamber 80 communicates with the rectangular waveguide section 44 through aperture 43. Electromagnetic energy is fed through mica window 70 into a waveguide secured to flange 45. The cathode button 20 is heated by heater 24 positioned in a cylindrical heat shield 21 which has a titanium or tantalum foil 22 fixed to its edge near cathode 20 to prevent heat conduction away from it. Focussing electrode 23 surrounds and supports 20 and is held by mica washer 25 gripped between flange 27 and nut 28. Washer 25 rests on a lip 32 of cylinder 31 into which is fitted annular anode 30 which is in turn held against bottom wall 15 of cylinder 11 by washer 25. Slits 33 allow cylinder 31 to be forced over cylinder 14, and spring members 34 urge 31 upwards and hold the electron gun in alignment with the aperture in re-entrant portion 16 covered by grid 17. The grid 51 covers the aperture in annular diaphragm 50 which is welded to lip 49 and end wall 13. Reflector electrode 52 is supported opposite grid 51 in sleeve 48 by projections 59 engaging groove 60 and rigidly holds washer 53 and reflector 52. Flexible diaphragm 63 is brazed to sleeve 48 and ring 46. Tuning is accomplished by means of the differential screw arrangement 68, 66, 57, the latter carrying tuner stop 65.
