Abstract

747,756. Electron lenses. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. April 5, 1954 [April 3, 1953], No. 9946/54. Class 39 (1). The outer electrodes 1, 2 of a unipotential lens project into the middle member 3, preferably with reduced diameter, and are provided with re-entrant parts 29, preferably with a curve concave to the interior of the lens, terminating in apertures 28 defining the passage for the beam. Preferably the distance of projection y is greater than the difference in radii x. A beam limiting aperture 33 is provided in a fieldfree region within electrode 2, and an exit aperture is provided at 34. Electrode 2 is supported by flanges 2a, 6a on anode 6 which, together with accelerating electrode 7, control electrode 9 and cathode 21, is set at an angle for iontrapping. Electrode 9 has a thinned-out central aperture 20 and a reinforcing rib 23 as described in Specification 747,755. The electrodes are spaced by stubs fused into glass rods, and disc 19 carries spring supports engaging the envelope wall and connecting the electrodes 1, 2 and 6 to the wall coating.
