Abstract

644,327. Cathode-ray tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Aug. 8, 1947, No. 21923. Convention date, Dec. 19, 1946. [Class 39 (i)] In a cathode-ray tube for use as a high intensity fluorescent light source, high current density in the final cathode-ray beam is attained without correspondingly increasing the second anode voltage or the electron velocity at the screen, by employing a plurality of electron guns for projecting, without deflection of the beams, respective electron beams whose trajectories cross over at a common electron baffle electrode, the guns being individually adapted for focusing the several beams at the electron opening in the baffle to form a virtual cathode thereat, and electrode means adapted in conjunction with magnetic focusing means for focusing on the screen an image of the baffle opening. In one embodiment the cathode-ray tube has two diverging neck portions 11 and 12, arranged at an acute angle with respect to the central longitudinal axis of the tube 13 so that their longitudinal axes intersect at a plane 17-17, and containing electron-emitting cathodes . 18 and 19 and associated control electrodes 20 and 21 which are excited in parallel from a video amplifier. Surrounding the neck portions 11 and 12 are focusing coils 42, and 43, or permanent magnets may be used, which are adjustable by means of screws 47 and 50 to focus the two electron beams on the opening 38 in a baffle electrode 37 located in the plane 17-17, the side of the baffle electrode facing the cathodes being coated with fluorescent material to facilitate said focusing. A coil 54 acts as an electron lens to form on the fluorescent screen 16 an image of the virtual cathode at the opening 38. The tube is provided with internal conductive coatings 24 and 39 of, for example, colloidal graphite, forming first and second accelerating anodes, and has a conventional deflecting coil 55. Voltage supplies are obtained from a system of resistances connected across a supply of the order of 8000 volts, the cathodes being connected to a potentiometer slider arm 28, enabling them to be suitably biassed. A greater number of electron guns may be employed, said guns being arranged symmetrically around the longitudinal axis of the tube.
