[Class 39 (i)] A device, for example for rectifying or switching, comprises an incandescent cathode arc discharge tube, pressure p of the filling of which lies between pmax. and 1À25 pmax. which values are, for argon, 0À02 mm. and 0À0008 mm. and for other gases or vapours values giving equivalent mean free paths, and the cathode of which is of wire, has a peak value of emission of 0À08+0À4p/pmax. amps. per sq. cm. of active cathode surface, and is so constructed that the distance between adjacent parts or turns is at least about double that distance at which the entire periphery takes part in the emission. The actual spacing for a helical cathode, may be at least equal to the wire diameter. The peak value of emission may be double the minimum value stated. The filling may comprise argon at 4.10<-3> mm. 6.10<-3> mm. 18.10<-3> mm. 20.10<-3> mm. or 60.10<-3> mm. or helium at 100.10<-3> mm. or neon at 70.10<-3> mm., or krypton at 12.10<-3> mm. or xenon at 10.10<-3> mm. or mercury at 8.10<-3> mm. or mixtures. Dimensions and characteristic curves of a typical rectifying arrangement are given.
