Abstract

Vacuum tubes; low-pressure metallic-vapour apparatus. - The temperature and consequently the pressure of the gaseous filling of a discharge tube containing a gas and preferably a metallic vapour e.g. mercury vapour are regulated by at least partially surrounding the tube with an enclosure which is in communication with a pump and has a. gas filling. A doublewave arc rectifier 1 consists of a Wehnelt cathode 2 and anodes 3, 4 and has a filling of argon and mercury vapour. An enclosure 6 containing air communicates at 7 with a pump. The air pressure may be about 1 cm.
