Abstract
484,143. Metallic - vapour apparatus. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. Nov. 24, 1937, No. 32407. Convention date, Nov. 27, 1936. [Class 39 (i)] In an artificially cooled high-pressure mercury vapour discharge tube 1 having solid electrodes extending but slightly from a vaporizable amount of mercury or amalgam 6 which partly surrounds them, the cross-sectional area of that part of the anode 3 which extends from the metal exceeds the area of that part of the cathode 2 which extends from the metal. The tube operates on D.C. and the anode is made larger for better cooling. Preferably the area of the anode is 1À5-5 times that of the cathode. A water-cooling jacket 7 surrounds the tubc. In the form shown, the envelope has internal and external diameters of 2 and 4 mms. The diameters of the cathode and anode are 600 and 1,000 microns respectively and these electrodes are 12À5 mms. apart and protrude by distances of 0À5 and 1-5 mms. respectively from the metal surface. The starting gas is argon at 50 mms. and when working at a current of 2 amps. on 500 volts the pressure is 100 atmospheres and the load 800 watts/cm.
