Low-pressure metallic-vapour apparatus; are lamps; arc-lamp electrodes.-In rectifiers having an enclosed arc discharge between an incandescent-oxide solid cathode and a cold solid anode and having a filling of rare gas, for example, as described in Specification 227,407, a vapour with an ionization voltage lower than that of the rare gas is introduced into the filling to reduce the starting potential of the arc and so the energy loss in the series resistance compensating for the difference between the starting and maintaining potentials. The filling may be argon mixed, and preferably saturated, with mercury vapour. A drop of mercury may be introduced into the tube. The rectifier may be used for charging accumulators from alternating-current systems.
