Abstract
158,458. British Thomson - Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). Jan. 19, 1920. Vacuum tubes. - A rectifier or highfrequency generator has an incandescent tungsten cathode 6 and an anode 5 in an envelope with a filling consisting substantially of helium. A small amount of another gas, such as hydrogen, may be mixed with t h e helium. The cathode terminates in an arcing-tip 7. The pressure of the helium may vary from a few millimeters of mercury to above an atmosphere, but is preferably about two thirds of an atmosphere. When used as a generator, a continuous-current generator 14, a resistance 17, and inductances 15, 16 are connected between the anode and cathode, and in parallel with this circuit, a variable reactance 20, a variable condenser 19, and the primary winding of a transformer 21 are connected.
