Abstract
417,179. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Garman, G. W. ; 98, Reynolds Street, Scotia, New York, U.S.A.) March 1, 1933, No. 6286. Convention date, March 1, 1932. [Class 39 (i).] A positive-column lamp operated from an alternating-current supply has an impedance for varying the luminosity, and the discharge is maintained by an auxiliary discharge throughout the lamp during the intervals when the main current falls below the value required to maintain the discharge. As shown, the main discharge passes between an indirectly-heated cathode 4 and two anodes 2, 3, and the auxiliary discharge between the cathode and an anode 9 is maintained by a continuous-current supply 11, 12. The output of the lamp may be varied over a wide range by an iron-cored impedance, one winding 35 of which is connected through a variable resistance 38 with the continuouscurrent supply and the other winding 33 is in the alternating-current circuit 29, 30. The secondary of the input transformer 14 is connected through resistances 22, 23 with the anodes 2, 3, and its centre point is connected through a solenoid 16 with the cathode. A mercury switch 18, operated by the armature of the solenoid 16, is connected through the contacts of an electromagnetic switch 28 and a resistance 27 across a part of the secondary. The anode 9 is connected through the solenoid of the switch 28 and a resistance 13 with the continuous current supply. Closure of the starting switch 15 causes the mercury switch to be opened and produce a high voltage impulse between the electrodes 2, 4. The auxiliary discharge is also started, and the starting circuit is opened by the switch 28. The filling consists of neon, argon, helium or mercury vapour or a mixture of these at a pressure of 1 to 10 millimeters. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specijkations 322,729, [Class 39 (i)], 352,902, and 397,466 (as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts).
