Abstract
349,859. Discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London.-(Assignees of Patent-Treuhand-Ges. f³r Elektrische Gluhlampen ; 11, Ehrenbergstrasse, Berlin.) Aug. 28, 1930, No. 25698. Convention date, Aug. 29, 1929. [Class 39 (i).] A device for ensuring starting of luminous electric discharge lamps, tubes and the like by means of high frequency current comprises a source of high - frequency current 14, a choke coil 18 for preventing leakage of high frequency current into the main supply circuit 4 . . 7, this choke being substantially non-capacitative and underdimensioned for the load it has to carry, and switching means 8, 10, 11 for connecting the choke in circuit only during starting. The choke coil 18 is connected in circuit on the depression of the switch 9, 10, 11 and is short-circuited by the contacts 9, 11, 8 during normal operation of the lamp. The high-frequency apparatus 14 which comprises an inductive interrupter, an oscillatory circuit and a step-up transformer is set into operation on the switch 9, 11 being depressed so as to connect it across the supply terminals 6, 7 and high-frequency voltage is applied across the electrodes 2, 3 of the lamp 1. At the same time the coil 18 prevents leakage of high-frequency current into the main supply. When the tube has struck the switch 9, 11 is released and normal operation takes place, the supply terminals being connected to the electrodes 2, 3 through the switch 9, 11 and a resistance 16 respectively. The device may also be used for the starting of tungsten arc lamps.
