Abstract
636,002. Supply systems for space-discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and CATES, J. Feb. 20, 1947, No. 5017. [Class 38 (iv)] In a discharge lamp circuit operating from a D.C. supply, and of the type comprising in addition to the resistive ballast R an inductance L1 and a glow discharge or coilheated thermal switch S which is first closed and then opened to provide the voltage surge, a second inductance L2 is included between a lamp electrode and the switch and so connected that the voltage surges produced by the inductances oppose to provide a voltage surge across the lamp substantially greater than that across the switch. The inductances preferably comprise two choke coils wound on a common core with the inductance of the coil L1 made greater than that of L2. The invention may be applied to lamps having cold or filamentary electrodes. A small condenser may be shunted across the switch for radio interference suppression. Specification 530,828 is referred to. According to the Provisional Specification the circuit may be operated from A.C. and the initial current may be reduced by including a further choke or a resistor between the lamp and switch.
