Abstract

364,393. Discharge lamps. SCHERING-KAHLBAUM AKT..GES., 170, M³llerstrasse, Berlin. Feb. 14, 1931, No. 4782. Convention date, Feb. 15, 1930. [Class 39 (i).] In a starting device for mercury arc lamps and other discharge apparatus provided with a main anode 42 and an auxiliary anode 122 disposed in its vicinity, the ignition current impulse generated by breaking the circuit of an inductance 142 is prevented by means such as a choke coil 112 from passing to the main anode and is forced to pass between the auxiliary anode 122 and the cathode 32 to effect the ignition of the lamp. The inductance 142, which consists of the winding of a solenoid is connected in series with a mercuryswitch 162 provided with an armature 202, and a resistance 152, in a circuit shunted across the supply leads 82, 92 which are provided with a main switch 182. The auxiliary anode consists of a reservoir 52 containing a quantity of mercury or the like in series with an adjustable resistance 132. The closing of the switch 182 produces a tilting of the armature 202, and the consequential breaking of the solenoid circuit produces a current impulse between the cathode 32, the auxiliary anode, and the choke 112, the discharge thus initiated passing subsequently between the main anode and the cathode.
