Supplying consuming devices. - Metal vapour lamps are operated by an alternating electromotive force the wave form of which corresponds with the resistance changes in the lamp. The dot-and-dash line in the Figure shows the voltage applied to the lamp terminals by the secondary of a transformer provided with an air gap adjusted so that the secondary volts fall from 1800 to 250 when the arc is struck in the lamp, the wave A - - G representing the voltage across the lamp terminals. Any other means, such as a generator with suitably designed field may be used to give the desired wave form.
