Abstract

507,479. Converting. I. G. FARBEN. INDUSTRIE AKT.-GES., and JOHNSON, G. W. Nov. 11, 1937, No. 31022. [Class 38 (ii)] An A.C. furnace in which the arc burns in an atmosphere of hydrocarbon, is supplied with direct current from an A.C. circuit through a rectifier employing discharge devices having immersion igniter control, the output of the rectifier being controlled in dependence on variations in the arc current to give stability of operation. In the form shown in Fig. 1 the ignition impulses for the discharge device J are derived from a circuit comprising a supply transformer C, saturable choke D and unilaterally conductive device E. Control in dependence on the arc current is obtained by introducing a biassing voltage into the circuit at H from a current transformer A and rectifier bridge B, in opposition to a constant biassing voltage introduced at G. In a modification this control circuit is employed to control an auxiliary grid controlled rectifier and ignition impulses for the main rectifier are derived from a current transformer connected in the anode circuit of the auxiliary rectifier. This auxiliary rectifier may also be controlled by means of any of the arrangements described in Specification 418,971.
