Abstract

858,363. Converting; automatic regulation; control systems for space-discharge apparatus. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 19, 1957 [Feb. 22, 1956], No. 5601/57. Classes 38 (2) and 38 (4). A control circuit for a controllable gasfilled discharge tube 7 comprises a capacitor 5 charged through a rectifier 4 and having connected across it a resistor 6 of which at least a part is connected in the grid-cathode circuit of the tube 7, so that, in the absence of other bias, the grid is negative with respect to the cathode. The tube 7 having a load 10 in its anode circuit is supplied through a transformer 11 and variable-positive grid bias is supplied through a supply 9 and potentiometer 8. As shown in Fig. 2, the voltage waveform across the resistor 6 has a linear portion 14 and the tube ignites at the instant when this curve cuts the ignition voltage curve (dotted). The point of ignition is varied by (a) varying the slider 19 and hence the amplitude of the waveform 13, 14 ; (b) varying the positive grid bias when the whole waveform is moved upwards or downwards, In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown), the positive bias arrangement 8, 9 is replaced by a circuit combination of resistor, rectifier, capacitor and glowdischarge tube. If the tube 7 forms part of an a/c stabilizer automatic voltage compensation is obtained by a suitable choice of curve 14. An increase in mains voltage 16 involves an increase in voltage 14 which shifts the ignition point to decrease the output voltage.
