[Also in Group XL (c)] A square wave voltage producing device, more particularly one for use in resistance welding apparatus including two inverseparallel connected discharge vessels controlled by the square wave voltages produced by the device, comprises two gas-filled discharge tubes 1, 2 fed from a direct current source 6, the tubes 1, 2 being supplied with ignition pulses from the windings 10, 11 respectively of a saturable transformer 12 in such manner that when one tube ignites the other extinguishes, the ignition pulses being continuously supplied to the tube 1 but which are operative at the tube 2 only for such times as are determined by the operation of a switch 15, the square wave voltage which appears at terminals 16, 17 being derived from a resistor 4 in the anode circuit of the tube 1, the times during which the tubes are ignited being determined by capacitors 8, 9 which are cross connected in series with windings 10, 11 between the anode of one tube and the grid of the other all as described in Specification 633,756 is characterized in that the junction between the capacitor 8 and the winding 10; and the junction between the capacitor 9 and the winding 11 are connected to the negative side of the direct current supply 6 by variable resistors 13, 14 respectively. The switch 15 may be a high vacuum diode.
