Abstract
617,354. Control systems for space-discharge lamps. STURDY ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., LARK, G. T. K., and DAVIE, R. B. June 19, 1946, No. 18473. [Class 38 (iv)] Space-discharge lamps having filamentary electrodes are provided with means such as a variable reactor or resistor whereby the discharge current can be controlled at will and the lamp dimmed, and with means whereby the current heating the electrodes falls with increasing lamp current and vice versa. The dimming means may be according to Specification 602,211. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement in which a choke 12 in series with a transformer 1 furnishing the igniting voltage and heating current is variably saturable by a winding 14 controlled by a resistance 16 in a D.C. circuit; the transformer may step up the voltage for the electrodes. Fig. 3 shows another form wherein the electrode heating currents are bucked by windings 22, 23 on the choke and in series with heating windings on the transformer; the choke saturating current is derived from the same transformer. The striking of the lamp is preferably assisted by housing it in an earthed metal fitting.
