Abstract

380,094. Discharge apparatus. BRETTMON; J., 226, Rue de Rivoli, Paris. March 12, 1931, No. 4473. [Class 39 (i).] One terminal of a voltage source is connected to a main electrode p, Fig. 1, and the other terminal to one of two auxiliary electrodes e<1>, e<2> of pointed form so spaced that a voltage lower than that applied to the electrode p produces an auxiliary glow discharge between the electrodes e<1>, e<2>. ' The main glow discharge then flows from the electrode p to the middle of the auxiliary discharge, which is continuously maintained during the operation of the tube and is essential for the maintenance of the main discharge. A single voltage source may be used, a resistance r reducing the voltage across the electrodes e<1>, e<2>. The electrode p may be duplicated and the invention may be applied to long luminous tubes. The discharges may be supplied with alternating current by centretapped transformers as in Fig. 6, two main electrodes p, p<1> being provided. The main discharge may pass through a porcelain or other porous insulating tube t, Fig. 3, enclosing the electrodes e<1>, e<2> and canalizing the auxiliary discharge. The tube t may be coated with porous metal oxides o, such as thorium oxide, heated by the auxiliary discharge and liberating electrons. Specification 150,692, [Class 39 (i), Electric lamps, Arc, &c.], is referred to.
