Abstract

574,581. Electron discharge devices. JONES, J. E. LENNARD-, and MITCHELL, J. W. Dec. 29, 1943, No. 21822. [Class 39 (i)] An electric discharge lamp includes at least two activated electrodes 42 and 44 in alignment, the activator being an alkali metal or compound thereof and the pressure of the inert gas filling lies between .1 and 3 atmospheres. The electrodes may be composed of copper, nickel or silver and the activator may contain potassium, potassium amalgam or its oxide or hydride. A starting electrode 7 may be provided. The filling may be helium, neon, argon, hydrogen, krypton, xenon, mercury vapour, or mixtures of these. The apparatus is used for producing intense brief flashes for photography. If a starting electrode is used, a condenser connected across the main electrodes is charged to a high voltage and the discharge triggered by a ballistic screen, for example, connected in the grid circuit of a triode whose anode circuit applies a voltage to the starting electrode through a transformer. In a two electrode construction, an auxiliary electrode in a spark gap in' the supply circuit breaks this down to give an intense voltage surge.
