Abstract
321,438. Dicker, S. G. S., (Naamlooze Vennootschap Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken). July 9, 1928. Vacuum tubes; low-pressure metallic-vapour apparatus. - A rectifier in which the electric field about the anode is stronger than the field about the cathode, is filled with a main gas or vapour to which is added a small percentage of another gas or vapour whose ionization voltage is lower than a metastable state, preferably the first metastable state, of the main gas &c., the pressure of the added gas &c. being such that the starting potential of a discharge when the cathode is negative is lower than when the cathode is positive. As shown, the cathode consists of a cylinder 5 and the anode of an axial wire 4 of tungsten or nickel. The filling is preferably one of the rare gases argon, neon, and helium, with a small percentage of mercury vapour; for example argon at a pressure of 4 cms. of mercury, with 0.025 per cent of mercury vapour at a pressure of 0.01 mm. Dimensions of the electrodes are given.
