Abstract

380,740. Discharge apparatus. NAAM. LOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN, 13D, Emmasingel, Eindhoven, Holland. April 4, 1932, No. 9613. Convention date, April 4, 1931. [Class 39 (i).] A tube has a cold cathode consisting of two or more spaced parts and containing a gas or vapour the atoms of which can be in a metastable condition, and the gas &c. near one part of the electrode is subjected to radiation by light containing frequencies adapted to be absorbed by the metastable atoms, so that the conductivity of the discharge path near that part decreases and the discharge is transferred to the other part or parts. As shown, the cathode consists of two semicircular discs 5, 6. The potential between the part 5 and the anode 2 is made greater than that between the part 6 and the anode by inserting a resistance 15 in the circuit of the part 6, or by mounting the part 5 nearer the anode. The transference of the discharge from the part 5 to the part 6 due to radiation by light from a lamp 16 produces a reading in an ammeter 14. The filling may be neon at a pressure of 20 millimetres, and a small quantity of gas or vapour having a lower ionization potential, for example 0À001 per cent of argon, may be added. The device may be used -in apparatus for registering the number of persons passing a given point.
