Abstract

Vacuum tubes; low-pressure metallic-vapour apparatus.-The main gas filling of a tube for use as a lamp, rectifier, or amplifier, has added to it a small quantity of a gas having a potential of ionization lower than the potential at which the first inelastic collision occurs in the main gas. In one example, 0.5 to 5 per cent of argon is added to neon at a pressure of 1 cm. of mercury. In such a tube, with electrodes 5 cm. apart, a discharge will be produced at 220 volts, whereas no discharge occurs at that potential in neon or argon alone. In other tubes, a small quantity of argon or krypton is added to helium : or krypton is added to argon. Commercial neon which consists of a mixture of neon and helium may be used as the main filling instead of purified neon. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also tubes in which a small quantity of neon is added to helium, or mercury to argon. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
