Abstract

289,882. Naamlooze Vennootschap Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken. May 6, 1927, [Convention date]. Vacuum tubes.- Gas-filled discharge tubes with an incandescent cathode and one or more anodes for rectifying alternating currents have the distance of the cathode 2 from the anode 3 so large that reverse discharges are prevented and one or more auxiliary electrodes 4, 5 are provided to assist ignition. The electrodes 4, 5 are connected to the anode 3 through an auxiliary discharge rectifier 6 so connected that current can pass from the cathode 2 to the electrodes 4, 5 and then through the rectifier 6 to the anode 3 so that the electrodes 4, 5 are charged positively. When no current passes through the main tube 1, no current passes through the tube 6 and no potentials are produced on the electrodes 4, 5 tending to assist reverse discharges. High resistances 11, 12 are connected in series with the tube 6 to limit the current through it and a steadying resistance 10 is arranged in the main circuit from the secondary 9 of the supply transformer to the tube 1. Condensers 13, 14 between the cathode 2 and electrodes 4, 5 strengthen the auxiliary discharge. The tube 1 may be filled with rare gas at a pressure of 3 cms., the cathode 2 being coated with electron-emitting material. The tube 6 may be a high-vacuum rectifier.
