Abstract

474,292. Metallic-vapour rectifiers. BRUNNQUELL, O. April 25, 1936, No. 11804. Convention date, April 25, 1935. [Class 39 (i)] A mercury or other metallic - vapour rectifier having a gas filling consists of an elongated tube with a dividing wall m separating two anodes c, d, a cathode b, of mercury or other vaporizable metal, and one or more internal starting electrodes a, i, a resistance g, g<1> being included in the circuit of each starting electrode for limiting the current between that electrode and the other electrodes under no-load conditions to a value below that at which a glow takes place, but sufficient to produce ionization. The starting electrodes are connected through the resistances with auxiliary windings f of an auto-transformer e. It is suggested that when the load is applied an arc occurs between a starting electrode and one anode, and causes an arc to be set up between the anodes before the main discharge starts between the anodes and the cathode. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), a separate transformer is connected between a starting electrode and an anode, and the resistance is connected in the primary.
