Abstract

493,861. Electron multipliers and circuits therefor. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., and BANKS, G. B. April 15, 1937, No. 10775. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] In an electron multiplier with secondaryemitter electrodes at successively increasing potentials derived from a potentiometer, at least that portion of the potentiometer between the penultimate and final secondary-emitter electrodes S4, S5 and preferably the whole of the potentiometer is formed by devices such as gas-discharge tubes DT1 ... DT6 which give a constant voltage drop independent of current. As shown, the discharge tubes are connected in series with a ballast resistance R1 and the output electrode O is connected through a resistance R2 to the junction of the last discharge tube and the ballast resistance. The discharge tubes may comprise nested electrodes E1, E2, Fig. 3, in a glass envelope, or a mainly metal envelope E2V, Fig. 4, constituting one of the electrodes and containing the other. For low operating voltages, tubes of which the cathode is of a metal with a low value of work function or tubes into which such a metal has been admitted during manufacture should be used. The current through each discharge tube should lie between 0À5 and 5 milliamperes per sq. cm. of cathode. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 478,153.
