[Class 39 (i)] An auxiliary grid between the cathode and the control grid is maintained at a positive potential of one to two volts, for example 1À2 volts, and is so formed that it acts as an accelerating electrode at low anode potentials and as a decelerating electrode at high anode potentials. The grid may comprise a few turns of wire, or two or more wires parallel to the cathode or a helix having the same number of turns as the control grid. It is stated that the anode current-grid potential characteristic is a straight line. Specification 317,793, [Class 39 (i)], is referred to.
